Mpumalanga Activities for the Adventurous at Heart

By Focus Online Team on August 8, 2018

Nicknamed ‘The Slowveld’, the Mpumalanga Lowveld is often associated with lazy days on safari and the slower pace of life typical of small town South Africa. Many visitors are often surprised by the wide array of heart-thumping activities on offer in the Lowveld. Hazyview lies at the heart of all the adventure in Mpumalanga and Perry’s Bridge Hollow Hotel is the perfect base from which to see it all. Take a look at some of our favourite adventure activities below.

Blyde River Canyon Waterfall Picnic and Helicopter flight

This exhilarating helicopter flight swoops over deep gorges and meandering rivers, to the breathtaking Lisbon Falls plummeting down 92-metres and over the legendary Cascade, Berlin, Mac-Mac and Forest Falls. The Pinnacle and Three Rondawels provide the perfect finale before landing at the ultimate lunch spot on the mountain where guests can indulge in a picnic accompanied by fine South African wines.

Passengers can be collected from any of the hotels and game lodges in Timbavati, Manyeleti and Sabi Sand area (provided there is a heli-pad). There are two scheduled flights per day, although departure times can be flexible so as not to interfere with game drives.

From Hazyview area – 1½ hour flight
From Sabi Sand/ Timbavati area – 2 hour flight

Sabie River ‘Geckoing’ or White Water Tubing

Geckoing is one of the most popular adventure activities to try in the Lowveld. Tubers get the chance to descend the Sabie River Gorge with a “gecko” – an oval white water tube with a hard bottom – which makes steering easier and ensures you don’t hit your bum on the rocks. The rapids are Class 2 (Grade 2) rapids and half way down the section you get the chance to jump off a 8m waterfall.

The course is roughly 2.5 hours long and costs ZAR460pp. Enquiries can be made at or online here.
