Hazyview

Named after the haze that hangs over the lowveld bushveld in summer, Hazyview Mpumalanga has a history of gold mining and played an important part in the development of the Lowveld area. The town was established in 1959 when the post office was built. Hazyview is centrally located in the area/region called Kruger Lowveld in Mpumalanga. It is an easy hours drive from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and is 420 km from Johannesburg, a mere 4 hour drive.

The greater Hazyview area (including the Southern Kruger National Park) is home to an estimated 3000 plant species, half of South Africa’s butterfly species half of South Africa’s bird species and half of South Africa’s mammals. The subtropical climate, coupled with the fertile soils of the Sabie, Mac Mac, Sand and Sabaan river valleys, the absence of frost and the abundance of water, is every farmer’s dream come true. Hazyview produces about 20% of the country’s bananas. Other agricultural crops include citrus, granadilla, papaw, avocado pears, mangos, litchis, macadamia & pecan nuts, ginger, vegetables, flowers and timber.

Here the hot summer days are often cooled by afternoon or evening rainfall and the warm winter days boast cloudless skies.

Temperatures vary in summer (October – April) from 18°C – 40°C and winter (June – August) from 8°C – 25°C. Hazyview has Summer rainfall, with the most rainfall measured between November and February with an average of 767mm per season. It receives the lowest rainfall (±3mm) in June and the highest (±139mm) in January.

The area is reputed to have the best climate in the world for banana growing and you can see row upon row of these lush tropical plantations while travelling through the area. A great number of tropical and semi-tropical fruits are also grown in the area. Mosquitoes unfortunately thrive in the climate of the Lowveld. Should you be visiting the greater Mpumalanga area and the Game Reserves, please consult a local pharmacist or family physician for advice on the best anti-malaria drug or drug combination you should take before visiting.
